Wilderness & Ecotourism

Enjoy a stay that is eco-friendly yet still indulgent, knowing that you will be leaving behind the lightest environmental footprint. Our 150 acre certified organic property (view our Organic Certification) surrounds the cottages and the wealth of native birdlife and abundance and diversity of native plants are a testament to the biodiversity plans and land management techniques implemented at Takou River. These include fencing all our riparian boundaries, planting over 40,000 native trees since 2004 and eliminating the use of all chemical sprays, pesticides or artificial fertilisers. Managing the Cottages, Lodge and our new Luxury Camping or 'Glamping' Site in line with our environmental action plan, we make every effort to ensure your stay has the minimal environmental impact, from solar power at our 'Glamping' Site; rainwater harvesting and use; chemical free water treatment; grey water recycling for irrigation; energy efficient appliances and lighting; waste segregation, recycling and composting; low toxicity, biodegradable eco-friendly cleaning products and toiletries; recycled and reclaimed building products; organic vegetable gardens, instantaneous gas hot water; Carbon offset programmes and more.

If you have ever wanted the perfect escape, Takou River provides the answer! The two purpose designed River Cottages and Lodge are set amid 5 acres of sub-tropical gardens bounded by the peaceful Takou River. The beautiful deserted sandy beaches at Takou Bay are just a short paddle downstream.
Both cottages have their own romantic alfresco claw foot baths perched on the deck of the cottage or at the private Summer House hidden in the gardens.  I admire the hosts Ian and Anna's passion for travel and the environment evident from the beautiful recycled timber floors, artifacts from their work and travel, and the thousands of native trees which they have planted while converting their 150 acre property to organic status.
Each cottage comprises two en suite double bedrooms opening directly onto the lawns;  a light, airy open plan kitchen, living and dining area with private sundeck and cosy wood fires. The larger north facing Lodge has stunning views across the lily ponds, lawns and gardens to the river and features a cosy wood fire and indoor spa bath as well as a beautifully appointed kitchen and soaring cathedral ceilings.
A new addition is the beautiful and romantic Luxury Camping or 'Glamping' Escape, perched in a magical and secluded corner of the Takou River, with beautiful views across the water, the Glamping Site is designed as a unique and romantic escape for a  couple (or small family). It features a beautiful large (6m x 4m) white canvas safari tent, pitched on a permanent Kauri floor, complete with beautiful vintage styled furniture (super king bed, luxury linens, sofa, etc) and stunning views. The site also has its own magical alfresco bath perched under the Pohutukawa Trees on the river bank, as well as a private jetty on the river with fishing rods, kayaks and canoes. To complete the site, we have created a lovingly restored vintage kitchen and bathroom, complete with a hot shower, solar lighting, flush loo and full kitchen.  Camping in style! Kayaks and canoes are available for guests' use, ideal for heading down the river to the beautiful and deserted beach close by at Takou Bay.
