Whale & Dolphin Watching

An encounter with one of these awe inspiring creatures leaves a lasting imprint on the memory, the spout and the graceful sweep of the tail as the whale descends to the depths are a privilege to behold. Sperm whale sightings are most common, with all other whales viewable at certain times of the year sightings can include Southern Right, Humpback, Fin, Sei, Brydes, Pilot, Southern Bottlenose and the mighty Blue Whales, as well as Dusky, Common, Hectors, Risso's and Southern Right Whale Dolphins and the massive Orca, although these are spotted less frequently.

Whakatane the opportunity to encounter migrating whales there have been sightings of Orca, Finn, Minke, and Pilot whales.

It is this deep water that has provided the environment to attract and sustain giant sperm whales and other whales The male sperm whales, particularly the younger ones, occupy the area all year round. Seasonal populations also occur.

Dolphin Encounter

Swimming with the dusky dolphins or watching them from the comfort of the boat is a “must do” activity while visiting Kaikoura.  Tours operate all year round and all equipment for snorkelling with the dolphins is provided.  Check our website for details.
