As well as a network of long haul scenic train services such as the Overlander in the North Island, the Tranzalpine and the Coastal Pacific in the South Island there are a number of iconic historic locomotive experiences in New Zealand, such as the Kingston Flyer on the shores of Lake Wakatipu 40 minutes from Queenstown and the Taieri Gorge service which runs from Dunedin to Pukerangi near Middlemarch in Central Otago. A curiosity in the Coromandel is the Driving Creek Railway, the brainchild of potter Barry Brickell. A number of ‘societies’ voluntary organisations have restored locomotives which are on display.
