Skiing & Snowboarding

The ski season usually runs from late June to early October. Weather and snow conditions obviously affect opening times and it varies for each field.

The countries two largest ski areas Turoa and Whakapapa are both on Mount Ruapehu in the Central North Island.

South Island, Rainbow, in the Nelson Lakes area north near Methven - Mount Hutt and Mount Potts / HeliPark are both within two hours drive of Christchurch International Airport. The Southern Alps offer a range of ski resorts & ski fields, plus heli-skiing. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables serviced by Queenstown, Treble Cone, Cardrona and the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area by Wanaka.

The eastern side of the Southern Alps features club fields with rope tows, simple lifts and a varied collection of private ski lodges. They welcome non memberswith most only accessible by 4WD, some a long walk in. The main Heliskiing locations are Methven, Mount Cook, Queenstown and Wanaka an option if you are an intermediate skier and can handle powder.

Central North Island

Whakapapa

On the north-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand's largest ski area, with more than 65 trails across 1050 hectares with club accommodation on the mountain.

Turoa  

Serviced by Ohakune Turoa is on the south-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu and has Australasia's longest vertical descent and New Zealand's highest lift.

Queenstown, Coronet Peak.
