The Christian Brothers Order had been on the property at 295 Rattray street since 1876 and the current Stately residence was built in the early 1920's in the area known as the "Vatican" district. At one time the huge residence housed up to 13 Brothers. In March 2005 there were only 4 remaining.

The Christian Brothers for most of its history has been associated with education. In Dunedin it has been involved in Christian Brothers Junior and High schools, St Pauls, St Edmunds and in recent times at Kavanagh College.

The Renovation April 05-Nov 05

The massive renovation spanned 8 months and entailed, new plumbing with 15 tiled ensuites, new wiring, installation of a central heating system, earth quake strengthening and fire rating etc.

The intention was always to retain the original heritage character of the building and being sympathetic to it’s history. Unfortunately the 3rd level of the residence was dramatically altered in the 1950/s with the loss of the three dormer windows in the roof line. The addition of the substantial balustrade and the awnings have gone some way to soften the earlier alterations. We are very pleased with the overall result and we hope you will be too.

The Brothers Boutique Hotel, originally home to an order of teaching monks, the Christian Brothers, retains an air of the monastic. In the 'Vatican' district of Dunedin, adjacent to Kavanagh College it was built in the 1920s.

Owners Rod and Shelley McMeeken, who purchased the building some 6 years ago, with four of the brothers still in residence, made a conscious decision to be faithful to the heritage of the three storey brick building. Other than the installation of 15 tiled, ensuite bathrooms little has been done to alter the internal structure of the building. The massive renovation which took place between April and November 2005 included new plumbing, new wiring and earthquake proofing.

Probably the most intriguing room is the 'Chapel' complete with stained glass windows and vaulted ceiling. This spacious king suite is the largest of the hotel's 15 rooms.  The four rooms on the third storey, originally with dormers but radically altered in the 1950s, enjoy unrivalled, stunning views of Dunedin below and the Otago Harbour beyond.

The hotel although described by its owner as minimalist in its décor, is extremely comfortable, elegant and unpretentious. The downstairs guest lounge is capacious, providing space for corporate groups to meet and guests to entertain friends and family. Early evening complimentary drinks are served, giving guests an opportunity to meet and also to discuss their plans with their very knowledgeable hosts, Rod and Shelley.  The McMeekens have been involved in tourism for many years, but The Brothers is their first foray into the business of providing accommodation.

The hotel is within easy walking distance to vibrant central Dunedin with its array of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars. The six minutes down into town translates into a ten minute return trip.
