Hokitika is an historic seaside town on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Its colourful history and origins date from 1864 when it was the 'rip roaring' goldfields capital of Westland and important bustling river port. Today Hokitika is a friendly rural town with wide attractive streets and an inviting community for visitors.

We recommend a two night visit, if your time permits, as Hokitika is an ideal base for day trips exploring this beautiful and dramatic region.

The West Coast of the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island is a unique area of absolutely breathtaking scenery. It includes the soaring mountain peaks of Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, New Zealand's highest and second highest mountains respectively as well as renowned Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers which descend from the high snowfields almost to sea level.

You'll discover wild wilderness beaches, tranquil lakes, dense lush rainforests, waterfalls and rivers all set between high snowcapped mountains and the Tasman Sea.

Stay awhile and experience the delightful hospitality of Teichelmann's Bed & Breakfast in Hokitika and explore this wonderful area with all its fascinating history, geology, attractions and adventure.

Brian and Frances will help you with local information, advice and bookings for tours, sightseeing and activities

Situated in the heart of Hokitika, Teichelmann's is part of West Coast history. Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann was a renowned surgeon, mountaineer, photographer and conservationist. This historic home and medical rooms has been meticulously preserved with many wonderful examples of memorabilia from the era.

Frances and Brian are the perfect kiwi hosts. The five double bedrooms are all tastefully decorated with beautiful linens, ensuite bathrooms and many personal touches. Alternatively choose Teichy's garden cottage. Relax in this wonderful garden studio unit, enjoy the spa bath overlooking the miners' cottage garden.

Teichelmann's is perfectly situated for exploring the national park areas of the beautiful West Coast. Many of the well renowned art and craft centres are within walking distance. Frances and Brian are only to happy to help with travel plans, arranging dinner bookings at adjacent restaurants or you may choose to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Breakfast is served in the dining room and is not to be missed. Enjoy a choice of cereals, fruits, delicious home made breads, and your choice of cooked breakfast, all beautifully presented.

There is a time when one needs to feel pampered and spoilt and Teichelmann's is the perfect place while absorbing a part of history.
