Rimu lodge is elegant and intimate and overlooks the Hokitika River and distant alpine peaks. The building has a steeply pitched roof which fits in with the mountainous surroundings and the views from the property are unparalleled. It was once a family holiday home but hosts, Helen and Peter, felt it was too good to keep to themselves.

The guest lounge has cathedral-like ceilings and I enjoyed sitting in this space, in front of a roaring fire, before evening drinks were served. There are four guestrooms, each with spacious ensuites. They are decorated with modern, good taste and have plenty of room to spread out in.

I woke up in the morning and through my window was a surreal view of the mountain peaks rising majestically out of the mist. Breakfast was served on the deck where Helen offered me wonderful home-made muesli and the option of a cooked breakfast. She recounted interesting stories about the area and gave me advice on what to do during my stay.

Rimu Lodge is well-placed if guests want to explore the region, but it is also a treat to relax and enjoy the lodge.
