High above Doubtless Bay guests at Carneval Ocean View enjoy the sight of scalloped pink-sand beaches, glittering sea and shadowy headlands. Tables and chairs have been set around the outside of the house to maximise the view whatever the weather.
There are two cheerfully furnished guest bedrooms. Mine had a wonderful view through a large picture window; the other has a similar outlook from its adjoining conservatory. Both rooms have large walk-in wardrobes, ensuite bathrooms, televisions, videos and tea and coffee-making facilities, but I was also encouraged to share the other areas of this peaceful and comfortably appointed house.
Martha says many people come here as guests and leave as friends. She and Roly came to New Zealand six years ago and speak several languages. Their Swiss name translates as Carneval in English. Roly is a qualified chef and if pre-arranged will cook dinner for his guests.
But there are also many excellent restaurants close by which includes the country's best fish and chip shop. Roly served me his Swiss-style breakfast on the sheltered terrace overlooking Cable Bay. Down the hill I enjoyed the safe swimming beaches using the snorkelling gear and a surfboard that are for guests use.
