Pulling up at the gates, Geoff and Sharon are there to greet us, but they are not the only ones. There is Toby, a very lovable Jack Russell who quickly takes my place in the passenger seat and directs the driver to the car park outside our own apartment aptly named Gull Cottage.
Within a few minutes we had settled into this two storied haven - dining area, bathroom and lounge downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. The décor is very tasteful featuring items of furniture fashioned from recycled Kauri timber recovered from historical buildings. The walls are adorned with local art. Geoff and Sharon had kindly left a superb antipasto plate, with homemade preserves, fruits, and cheeses. A bottle of wine was also chilling. We adjourned to the deck. There is a choice of two, one up and one down. A great way to relax after a long journey.
Gull Cottage is only minutes from the world renowned Cathedral Cove and a short drive to Hot Water Beach where hot springs bubble up in the tidal zone. Our hosts have thought of everything including a spade so you can dig your own bath. It is just a short walk around the corner to restaurants or take the ferry to Whitianga, a ten minute drive away.
I just have to mention the fabulous breakfast the next morning with freshly baked hot bread. We were sorry to leave here. Shame Toby was not back in the car as we left.
