What a gem! This 1872 kauri villa has been passionately restored, lovingly furnished with antiques and is now a four star boutique, intimate guesthouse.
Karamana was rescued from obscurity and transformed into bed and breakfast accommodation 15 years ago and is a category 2 Historic Places listing. Present owners Judie and Ian continue the Victorian colonial theme.
On the hot summer day I visited I enjoyed a glass of wine in the shade of the gazebo on the front lawn. Inside, the old parlour is now the dining room, a sun filled room overlooking the garden and a fitting venue for your silver service breakfast.
I stayed in both double rooms but particularly fell in love with the king size four poster, Scottish antique bed in the Victorian room. The Cadman Room is at the front of the house and overlooks the garden.
Judie and Ian's hospitality is definitely not intrusive and I was left to my own devices whenever I wanted.
The Stables Cottage, across the courtyard is great if you want absolute privacy and it can be semi self catering. Karamana is an easy walk to Coromandel Township which has several good restaurants.
In keeping with the historical theme we recommend the one hour tour of the Coromandel Gold Stamper Battery.
