The River Lodge is situated in a very private and secluded spot at the end of the road on the banks of the Mangawhero River. The outlook towards Turoa ski field on Mt Ruapehu is awe-inspiring.

The lodge was purpose built with two suites and there is an additional two chalets in the maturing gardens. We are greeted by our hosts Denton and Gayle and their delightful little dog who will steal your heart then shown into the lounge where the atmosphere is friendly, calm and relaxed with oversized armchairs and open wood fire crackling in the grate.The Lodge rooms are very spacious and share those gorgeous mountain views. The decor is restful and it's not long before you are completely at home. The Garden Chalets are equally well appointed with rich, inviting colors and outdoor terraces overlooking the garden.

Ohakune has much to offer the holiday maker in all seasons. Trout fishing (seasonal) is on the doorstep or a guide can be arranged for further afield. Whanganui River activities are just a short drive and there are numerous biking tracks, golf course courses and adventure sports, and in winter, skiing. Gayle and Denton will happily make any arrangements for you including a pick up for the famous Tongariro Crossing.

What makes The River Lodge special though is the fabulous friendly atmosphere, joining our hosts for dinner, listening to other guests' stories and just taking time out. A refuge for mind, body and soul.
